Fancy and Fine!

We’re excited about the great shows coming up this weekend at Essence of Bellydance. We try to go to as many conferences and bellydance shows near and far as possible. This year’s program features Egyptian icons like Mohamed Shahin! Also taking the stage and teaching workshops is Andrus Ramir of Miami! Suhaila Salimpour will be in town as will Colleen Shakti and dance greats from around the globe.

Each night are big shows and gala events that warrant a fancy dress or two. We’ve got some fun things you can wear for your night on the town at Essence of Bellydance. Sorraiah’s Star and Lycra Pants Set.

Tickets are still available if you want to grab a few for you and your friends! Click here or show up at the Twelve Atlantic Station starting the 15th to get your tickets in person. Downtown and Midtown Atlanta are quite cool and comfortable at this time of year! We look forward to seeing you there!

Elaborate and Elegant – Costumes for You!

Oh there’s nothing that compares to getting a new costume at the start of the year. You plan all of the places you’re going to wear it. You want to look elaborate, not gaudy, elegant without the kitchen sink of accessories. There’s a method and a know-how to getting dressed for a successful show or raqs presentation. This week we’re looking at the elaborate costume and how to jazz it up without going overboard. We also want to hear from you!

Our Tempi set is a fine example of elegant raqswear that has plenty of embellishments. You’ll want to wear a set of bangles with this and a lovely veil. Much more would be a bit over the top but hey…sometimes over the top raqs! What do you want to see accompanying this ensemble? Let us know.

Coastal Jewel references the edgier styles we see on both coasts. From hard core rocking raissat in Los Angeles and Seattle, to bold city bound dancers killin’ it in the cafes of New York and Miami. We’re pairing this with our silver sets. This one being one of our favourites. But is that what you would do? Let us know. Tell us, how would you pair your accessories for this elegant and elaborate raqswear?

Warm Up with MissBellydance.com

Warming up before a dance class is extremely important. Especially during these cooler parts of the year. We’d like to remind you to not take chances on your health. Use legwarmers, wear longer warmer workout wear and be sure to wrap up well as you head out in your costumes. We have velvet Thobes with a dynamic print that you can wear over your bedluhs and beladi dresses. You can also wear these great modern thobes with the hood during the day when it’s slighty warmer and the sun is out.

cs333-2t

Legwarmers are important as well. Use these in class and keep them on until you’re done. You may even want to wear them when you get back in a cold car after dancing up a sweat. Going back and forth from cold to hot can jar your system. We’re not doctors and this isn’t official medical advice but instead tips that have worked for us over the years.

Let us know how you’re doing in your classes and progress in the art. If you’re headed out to a raqs conference or a show let us know! We happily support our fans and encourage lifelong learning.

Glamour is important when you’re going out on stage. But you also want to look good when you’re in class and out and about with your friends. We’ve discussed the wonderful world of bellydance workout wear and practice outfits in the past but did you know these can be worn as outfits too?

Pair these pieces with your favourite long knit jacket for the fall. Do it up with a little jewelry and cool items from your dance treasure. Let the whole world know you’re into raqs with the right kind of wear.

cs309-6t

MissBellydance has these in lots of different styles and colours and colourways. They’re just the right price for festival season and dance class. But the fabric is limited and won’t last forever. Get these while you can and let us know what you think.

Soraiah Saied of Egypt

Top Egyptian Star Returns to the City
Last year Sorraiah Saied came into our personal lives and stole our hearts. She is by far one of the most amazing instructors we’ve ever encountered and we are overjoyed at her return to Essence of Bellydance 2016. We hope she continues to be a featured star and sister to this outstanding Raqs Conference. Get the schedule here

Classes are comfortable and the crowds are friendly…

We hear so many stars, fans and conference attendees rave about Essence and how they can’t wait to return. We agree. It is one of the top notch stops on the dance calendar that we prepare long in advance to attend. The hotel is incredible with modern condo style luxury suites at phenomenal prices. It’s situated in the heart of a very happening and upbeat city that is diverse and easy to navigate thanks to local transit and car services. Most restaurants close around 2am-3am and really famous southern spots stay open all night with 24/7 menus like The Diner franchise located at pulsepoints around the city and deep into the suburbs. Atlanta is one of the best places to host an event and it is home to our favourite annual dance events.

Atlanta is also home to our main HQ, MissBellydance.com. For over 13 years we’ve been raqin’ out with fellow Atlantans and keeping our prices low because we make a lot of our costumes ourselves. Come say hi to members of our team at Essence of Bellydance. We’d love to meet you in person. We’ll be doing trivia and other fun things online that weekend. Those who are present will be able to pick up prize packs and discounts on their favourite costumes. So much to look forward to this September. We can’t wait to spend it with Sorraiah Saied, Team Essence and YOU!

Keep it Raqin’

Competition Couture from MissBellydance.com

There’s so much going on in dance! In particular, there are opportunities to enter competitions in dance this fall. From coast to coast dancers have the opportunity to make a name for themselves through presenting their best of bellydance and raqs sharqi. Showing off your top skills is best done in a great costume.

image
MissBellydance.com bedluh’s are custom made to fit all dancers in a variety of sizes, it’s tailor made.

Some competitions require dancers to submit one video where they are wearing regular dance clothes and not a costume. We have understood that this is for judges to see the bare skills at the preliminary level before narrowing it down to the top 10 for competition. We suggest wearing something that still makes you look and feel good like frilly cute things. Be sure to check all of the requirements. You may have to wear something very plain but if you don’t have to then go all out with some awesome casual and cute raqswear.

For men in preliminaries, a great shirt, a vest and or cool harem pants will do you fine. Pair it with a great hipscarf and a comfortable t-shirt. You can raqs ’em and flatter ’em with cute styles and still stay within the rules. We wish everyone the best as they compete this summer and fall!

Hope to see you all at upcoming shows and more!

Wear It Well – Own your costume

We’re revisiting a very important topic, owning your costume in every sense of the word. Confidence in your great costume can be just as crucial as getting the technique right for your routine. When buying a costume, submitting your correct measurements is crucial. Any body changes or padding you’re adding or taking away is very important to the costume creator. For those that enjoy wearing bedluhs, making sure you have seen yourself from every angle will ensure you don’t have any costume malfunctions or undesired gaps in your outfit.

image

We suggest making a checklist each time you plan to perform in your costume.
1. Try it on as soon as you get it: If the outfit doesn’t fit or has any issues you can write to the company immediately so that things can be addressed in a timely manner. Most companies do not give refunds on custom made costumes so you’ll need to alert them quickly as they may be able to help you in other ways.

2. Look at the back of the outfit: Buy a standing mirror and make sure you see what your costume looks like from every angle. Certain dance moves may cause the costume to shift awkwardly and you’ll want to adjust your outfit accordingly.

3. Get a friend’s opinion: Ask a relative or someone close to you (even better if they are in the dance industry) to examine how you look in the outfit. They may be able to suggest a hair style, jewelry or other enhancements.

image

4. Do your routine in the costume once: See how it feels or moves. Doing Debke in a bedluh may require a cover up or abayah due to the leg movements, leaps and other footwork that lifts the skirt up. You don’t want to flash your audience.

5. Save it for the show: A lot of raqswear can be worn as evening wear but we suggest saving your elegant bedluhs and heavily embroidered garments for dance shows. They are quite special and you’ll want to wow your audiences with outfits they’ve never seen. If you like to wear raqs wear out, pick other less expensive items such as cool skirts, tops and jewelry that you can bellydance in for fun at parties. Save your bedluhs for your best performances.

image

In a future post we’ll look at caring for these heavily embroidered garments. We hope in the meantime you’ll continue to share photos from your shows wearing MissBellydance.com, all shares are entered to win prize packs all summer long.

Enjoy!
