Sheer Sets for Summer

Hot summer days are ahead and we’re ready with its of cool sheers and lovely lace. We’re grateful that our luxurious sets are so popular with our fans and followers. Which one did you choose for your Raqs wardrobe?

A suggestion we have is to get one colour of each in your favourite lace sets. These items set you apart from others in competitions. They are memorable and can be mixed, matched and layered to your liking. To conceal your outfit at festivals where there are few dressing rooms and backstage is just cramped, consider a chebba style jacket to cover up without getting too hot. This is certainly not the weather for velvet.

Jewelry on Tour

It’s quite a historic weekend for those that have been following the history of the Salimpour family. On a recent chat with one of the members touring with Bal Anat, we learned about their practice time and how much work goes into excelling at the format.

Another thing we noticed was our dance sisters wearing MissBellydance.com jewelry! These pieces shown are from a collection we have been carrying for over 10years. They are our signature look with nods to all the cultures of the backgrounds of our staff. We are a global group bringing people together through dance. It’s an honour to see many dancers wearing these to showcase the various cultures that make up Raqs Sharqi!

Thank you!! We are counting down the days to the tour’s stop in Atlanta! More on that next month!

Shimmy Mob 2018

ShimmyMob is an event where many dancers and bellydance enthusiasts gather to perform a specific choreography that is shared among dancers virtually and then done in 3D or live in designated places around the globe. This year we are supporting Valencia, a local dancer, who is organizing Shimmy Mob in Dekalb County. This is particularly exciting because we’ve always wanted to join in and here we are with a group that we really enjoy hanging out with at shows.

In the past ten years there have been a number of shimmy themed events that raise money and or awareness to various causes. In years past we had representatives at Shimmy-a-thon, a fundraiser where people shimmied for a length of time to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. There’ve been many other ways in which the art of Raqs Sharqi brought people together for the greater good.

MissBellydance.com will be holding a drawing for Shimmy Mob participants. Anyone who shows up and participates on Valencia’s team will be entered to win a set of hipscarves from our online store – a total value of $85. We’re looking at other teams to assist and help this year as well as looking to attend more events where there is a community focus and a giving component. We love to help out where we can.

Long zaghareets to Valencia and her team – we hope to see others follow suit!

Put a Little Chiffon in Your Spring

Spring is just a few days away and we’re already putting our fun and frilly chiffon skirts out for our followers and fans. These are very popular pieces that you can mix, match and layer. The panel skirts are full yet lightweight. We made these ourselves very carefully with the dancer’s comfort and ease in mind. The waist is elastic and has a closure on the side. You can take advantage of the layers using them as a sort of side slit where you can tuck in a veil from hip to hip for added volume. You can never have too much hip in Raqs Sharqi!

Another thing to note is the way in which the garment swirls as you spin and dance. It’s so light that even the slightest move shifts the panels of the skirt while the comfortable and secure waist stays in place. We also love these skirts because they are made to look good during a number of different styles and genres under the bellydance umbrella. You can wear it for Lebanese style sets as well as Egyptian sha’abi…you can make it work for just about anything.

The best part is they come in a variety of colours match several of our tops. You can also wear them year-round but we love showcasing them for spring due to the breezy, cool comfort of the fabric and the ease of wear! Let us know which one you choose. Also enjoy 10% off your pick using the code #SpringDance on MissBellydance.com!

Bellydance Fashion Basics – Beyond Beginners

Many dance studios offer a variety of dance courses including modern dance, yoga and ballet. Each dance compliments the other and is a great foundation for improving flexibility, stamina and discipline among other things. A basic leotard and unitard are essential for these classes. MissBellydance.com supplies not just bellydance wear and costumes specifically but a wide variety of dance wear that looks good and fits well.

This unitard is long sleeved and very comfortable as it is the Eurotard brand. You can use this for many dance styles and genres’ classes and even recitals where applicable. Pair this with modern dance skirts, legwarmers and other essentials for getting through your dance courses and workshops successfully.

Simple Elegance in Bellydance Fashion

Looking for something simple to start your beginners off with in the new year? Try a satin skirt with a fun flowing top with a dance belt. Allow the dancers to see the moves completely while still dressed to the nines in a fun outfit. Many dancers tell us they are in it because it’s a beautiful art form and they want to learn more about the culture behind it all while getting a chance to dance. This ensemble meets the needs of your basic and beginning students who are looking to dress in the fashion while learning.

This bellydance ensemble is also great for their first show. Some teachers have told us they want their students to have a uniformed look in their presentations. Because this skirt and top set includes solids and patterns it is memorable. With each student wearing this they will stand out with elegance and style.

If you and your troupe adorn themselves in this set, send us a photo to be entered to win a gift basket of cool jewelry and accessories from MissBellydance.com

In Love With Layers

This past week we featured an amazing costume of sheer fabric in layers. We love this look because it’s elegant and ruffled. It also allows you the cool breathing room that many dancers forget is needed even during winter months. Chances are the places you’re dancing in don’t have the air on full blast and a lot of cozy places even have the fire place blazing. Therefore wearing a little too much velvet can have you breaking a sweat a lot sooner than you might imagine. Layering sheers work well in this situation.

This amazing costume is one in a series of new looks set to debut in the coming weeks. It’s a skirt with a choli top layered over a sheer black lace skirt accompanied by eastern jewelry that you’d find in a Turkish Bazaar. Love the look? Let us know in the comments section or tag us when you share it online!

Toronto Bound

So, Yasmina Ramzy has been going to Egypt quite a bit and you can follow her amazing trip on Facebook. She is the founder of Arabesque Dance Company and we have been fans since 2008 when she brought Tito Seif and Aida Nour. Our archivist went for a very long visit to Toronto in order to attend and almost didn’t come back. She was so smitten with Yasmina there are witnesses to her crying in the airport and having to be forced to get on the plane. Yeah…that Arabesque can bring you to your knees.

So, we’re going back. We are headed to the Arabesque 30 year party at the Estonian House in Toronto. Our archivist is nervous that she might have another one of those, “I’m not coming back!” moments at the airport an we’ll perhaps have to have her report remotely. She’s quite adamant. So, we’re bringing some cool fashion photos with us to share of what we’ve been doing down here with our friends up there!

Let us know if you’re coming to the show, we’d love to meet you! Our stylist, archivist and friends will be faithfully lining up early to be present and accounted for in our traditional cultural attire!
