Another Great Weekend with Suhaila — Raqs Atlanta

Our friend and raqs archivist just released her experience watching Suhaila Salimpour’s Level 2 course. She loved it! Enjoy her take on the show!

I was grateful that I was allowed to sit in on one of the courses and the show during the Suhaila Level 2 weekend hosted by Atlanta Fusion Bellydance last weekend. On Friday, I was able to catch the first class. It was clear that these loyal students had been working out all day, dancing […]

Happy New Year!

We’re absolutely excited about 2019! We’re partnering with a number of dance shows and festivals to bring you the first glimpse of our couture and bellydance costuming line. For us these items are more than just costumes, these are our clothes. These items help make us who we are and help us showcase the hard work and skill that goes into the art of Raqs Sharqi.

Huge thanks to all who helped us out over the year including Essence of Bellydance, Caravan of Dancers, Simon Markysmoonlight and many others who have gone out of their way to showcase our couture and clothing to dancers around the globe and or been super supportive like Lebanese Simon Sako.

If you’re having an event and you’re looking to partner with vendors and more let s know. Send us a message ATTN: AskMissBellydance Partnership and we’ll get in touch! Happy New Year!

Masquerades Today

The modern masquerades of today feature a variety of outstanding costumes that are actually quite lovely given that some items of the modern day have little to no style at all. So much of what we see in modern day is either a bad spin-off of something amazing from yesteryear or very plain and animated in a less than flattering pattern. Events like DragonCon feature balls where people take exquisite care for their costumes and masks.

We’re right in this realm with our newest collection of face wear as mentioned a few weeks ago here on AskMissBellydance.com. Our goal is to support the intricate and heavily decorated items that you find at elegant masquerades. We’re taking this to a new level with refined and pristine pieces that will not only turn heads but make you the belle and beau of the ball.

Swirl Your Skirts

One of the most memorable things about a bellydancer is her skirt. Some may think it’s the bra top but the skirt accentuates the hips and that’s where the action happens. The swirl, the turns, the ornaments and other elements illuminate the garment making it a focal point for just about any raissa on the raqs stage. It’s essential to make sure that skirt is the most eye catching element of your entire wardrobe as a performer.

We’re particularly proud of one of our skirts. It’s the pedal skirt we’re highlighted in our flashsale. It has the eye catching embellishments and layers that make it an obvious garment fit for bellydance. We really love it. You will too!

Dance Hoodies

Our dance hoodie was inspired by one of our members with ties to the Maghreb. She loves the culture and has relatives from West Africa and is first generation herself. When looking for a cover-up to compliment our new designs she suggested going for the traditional yet modern style chebba wear. This birthed the Chebba Thobe or Chebba Hoodie.

It’s comfortable, long and covers the ankles so you can conceal just about anything or any costume. This one is rather sheer yet the fabric is so well put together it keeps you warm in the winter and still allows you to breathe in the summer. This is certainly one of our favorites and quite the head turner at international dance shows and events.

Sheer Sets for Summer

Hot summer days are ahead and we’re ready with its of cool sheers and lovely lace. We’re grateful that our luxurious sets are so popular with our fans and followers. Which one did you choose for your Raqs wardrobe?

A suggestion we have is to get one colour of each in your favourite lace sets. These items set you apart from others in competitions. They are memorable and can be mixed, matched and layered to your liking. To conceal your outfit at festivals where there are few dressing rooms and backstage is just cramped, consider a chebba style jacket to cover up without getting too hot. This is certainly not the weather for velvet.

Jewelry on Tour

It’s quite a historic weekend for those that have been following the history of the Salimpour family. On a recent chat with one of the members touring with Bal Anat, we learned about their practice time and how much work goes into excelling at the format.

Another thing we noticed was our dance sisters wearing MissBellydance.com jewelry! These pieces shown are from a collection we have been carrying for over 10years. They are our signature look with nods to all the cultures of the backgrounds of our staff. We are a global group bringing people together through dance. It’s an honour to see many dancers wearing these to showcase the various cultures that make up Raqs Sharqi!

Thank you!! We are counting down the days to the tour’s stop in Atlanta! More on that next month!

Shimmy Mob 2018

ShimmyMob is an event where many dancers and bellydance enthusiasts gather to perform a specific choreography that is shared among dancers virtually and then done in 3D or live in designated places around the globe. This year we are supporting Valencia, a local dancer, who is organizing Shimmy Mob in Dekalb County. This is particularly exciting because we’ve always wanted to join in and here we are with a group that we really enjoy hanging out with at shows.

In the past ten years there have been a number of shimmy themed events that raise money and or awareness to various causes. In years past we had representatives at Shimmy-a-thon, a fundraiser where people shimmied for a length of time to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis. There’ve been many other ways in which the art of Raqs Sharqi brought people together for the greater good.

MissBellydance.com will be holding a drawing for Shimmy Mob participants. Anyone who shows up and participates on Valencia’s team will be entered to win a set of hipscarves from our online store – a total value of $85. We’re looking at other teams to assist and help this year as well as looking to attend more events where there is a community focus and a giving component. We love to help out where we can.

Long zaghareets to Valencia and her team – we hope to see others follow suit!

Put a Little Chiffon in Your Spring

Spring is just a few days away and we’re already putting our fun and frilly chiffon skirts out for our followers and fans. These are very popular pieces that you can mix, match and layer. The panel skirts are full yet lightweight. We made these ourselves very carefully with the dancer’s comfort and ease in mind. The waist is elastic and has a closure on the side. You can take advantage of the layers using them as a sort of side slit where you can tuck in a veil from hip to hip for added volume. You can never have too much hip in Raqs Sharqi!

Another thing to note is the way in which the garment swirls as you spin and dance. It’s so light that even the slightest move shifts the panels of the skirt while the comfortable and secure waist stays in place. We also love these skirts because they are made to look good during a number of different styles and genres under the bellydance umbrella. You can wear it for Lebanese style sets as well as Egyptian sha’abi…you can make it work for just about anything.

chiffon

The best part is they come in a variety of colours match several of our tops. You can also wear them year-round but we love showcasing them for spring due to the breezy, cool comfort of the fabric and the ease of wear! Let us know which one you choose. Also enjoy 10% off your pick using the code #SpringDance on MissBellydance.com!
